Spring Hygge Ideas: 7 Easy Ways to be Happier

Sharing is caring!

You’ve probably read that everyone goes crazy with Hygge around the holidays and during winter.

But did you know that Spring is the perfect time to get your Hygge on?

Here are some Spring Hygge ideas that are a great way to get over the colder months and winter blues, and welcome the new spring with its warmer weather.

About Hygge Life

Hygge is the Danish word for cozy and contentment. And what better time of the year for this is Spring, right?

You may totally get this Danish concept for happiness. But then again, maybe you don’t.

It’s a challenge for me, or anyone really, to talk about Hygge and the awesome impact it can have on your life without sounding preachy. You know, like my post 30 Ways to Enjoy Hygge.

It’s like I’m saying, just do these things, and you too can embrace Hygge and everything will be perfect. That’s not my intention, but it could sound like that to some people.

Or when I send you a Hygge Planner, to help you plan some fun activities for yourself and your family, does that really give you value? Or is this printable more just a reminder that you need more relaxing activities in your very busy life?

I know, I know, lots of questions today. But here’s the thing.

I’m on this hygge journey with you and learning as I go. That’s what I want to share with you.

If planning ‘hygge-like’ activities for yourself and your loved ones is giving you stress, then you are not in the hygge zone and I am not helping you by saying, “you should do this, or you should print that”.

Holding your sweetie’s hand when you walk to the grocery store. It’s that good book you are reading, while waiting for the laundry to finish.

That’s your Hygge. You probably make room for Hygge in your life everyday, and don’t even know it.

But when you do those things, and that warm cozy feeling comes over you? That’s your Hygge moment.

Not complicated, not scheduled, not ticking the box.

When I published an article about how to be happy and the Danish key to happiness – Hygge. You all loved it! It became one of my top posts!

So I got to thinking, and especially with the Spring Equinox just around the corner, how could I give you even more ways to feel happy, contented and cozy?

Yes, there is so much written about Hygge (pronounced Hue-gah) about the things we can surround ourselves with to make us feel cozy, like a beautiful chunky shawl, or luscious fat white candles.

But there is definitely more to Hygge than the material things that get us to our happy space.

Cause if you remember from before, Hygge is about feelings, right?

Happy Feelings.

Cozy Feelings.

Feelings of Contentment.

Just like this quote In The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living:

Hygge is about an atmosphere and the experience. It is not about things. It is about being with the people we love. A feeling we are safe that we are shielded from the world… to be able to let our guard down.

Meik Wiking

So while we equate all of these things with cooler weather, staying indoors, cozying up in front of a fire to read or snuggle, 🙂 Hygge is everywhere!

And I think you will find that Spring is one of the best times to fit some Hygge into your life!

Hygge Spring Activities

1. Visit Your Local Farmer’s Market or Flower Market, and Spend Time Wandering

Soaking up the sites, sounds, and smells of a farmer’s market during Spring will definitely put a smile on your face.

Outdoor markets are a feast for the senses!

Go by yourself, or meet your best friend there.

You know, the one that you really miss, and haven’t been able to spend time with lately?

The smell of fresh flowers helps signal the arrival of spring.

Pick up a bunch of fresh cut flowers to take home, like beautiful white tulips.

Nothing says how to live Hygge in Spring quite like a bouquet of Tulips.

The bright colors and floral scents of these blooming flowers are one of life’s simple pleasures. It’s the little things that matter.

2. Clear Your Mind

Turn off the phone and pick up that new novel you’ve been wanting to read.

Or maybe you have an old favorite? I have some amazing books I bet I’ve read 20 times or more.

They are like old friends, and the contentment I feel when I read them is immeasurable. You too?

Brew yourself a cup of chamomile tea or even a hot chocolate, light a candle, and curl up with a cozy blanket and your pet if you have one.

If it’s warm enough to be outdoors, listen to the new leaves in the trees, or the different sounds in your city that mean Spring has arrived.

Even cozier, curly up with your honey, while you both read, and forget about the outside world.

3. Mindfulness

One of the easiest ways I know to live Hygge in spring is to get your hands dirty!

Give your houseplants some TLC. Pick up a bag of new potting soil, maybe a new pot?

And replant your favorites to give them new vigor for Spring.

It may be too early to plant where you live, but those backyard planters are perfect for putting your hands into the soil.

Feel that cool, dark earth on your fingers. Did you find a worm?  Just let it be, it will make your garden happy.

Well, OK Judy, but how is this going to help me get my Hygge on?

Mindfulness. Feeling the fresh dirt in your hands, and the care you are giving to your plants.

4. Connect – With Family or Friends or Both

I know how busy you are.

And getting people together takes planning right?

But this time of year is the best time to rekindle your relationships.

Ask for help, make a BBQ potluck and spend time getting caught up with the whole family with some nice cold beers.

You’ll be so glad you did.

One of the best ways I know of, to live Hygge in spring, is to get the BBQ fired up and invite the gang.

It’s a rite of passage really, to help us get over the dark days of a long winter, and into the shiny greenness of spring with its warmer months.

After eating, organize the gang for a group walk and enjoy the feels, smell the smells! A nature walk together is a beautiful way to spend a day together, and get that fresh air.

5. Make Something Yummy

Think mint chocolate milkshake in a pie.

No better way to provide a feeling of comfort, than with some good food!

Take it to work and share.

6. Get Some Vitamin D

Yes, there is sunshine out there! After the long, cold winter months, you might have forgotten!

Now find your own patch of sun, at the local park, on your front porch, anywhere at all, and soak up that natural light!

Even though it isn’t full strength yet, the springtime sun will soak through your bones, right to your heart.

For us in the trailer, a sheltered spot in the sun fills up our Vitamin D quota for days.

Got a spot in mind?

Perfect. Go and have a little time there now.

7. Be Good to Yourself

Yes you.

That means quiet time alone, away from the stresses, noises and that little voice that keeps saying “I should be doing…”.

A little self-care is important here.

Just tell that little voice to be quiet and you will get to it later.

Because you will, you know.

Those things we have on our lists will always be there.

This is a good time to pick up your journal, wrap yourself in a cozy shawl and write.

Anything at all. And then take a nap.
